Güssing fortress in Burgenland

The title of ‘land of the castles and fortresses’ suits Burgenland better than anywhere else. These castles are dotted across the state and bear testament to its rich and lively past which visitors are invited to explore.

Some of the most beautiful castles and fortresses in Burgenland and just over the border include:

  • Güssing fortress (approx. 18 km)
  • Riegersburg fortress (approx. 40 km)
  • Lockenhaus fortress (approx. 50 km)
  • Schlaining fortress (approx. 25 km)
  • Herberstein garden palace (approx. 35 km)

Güssing fortress

This is one of the oldest fortresses in Burgenland and is home to a large museum. Over 5000 exhibits can be viewed here including weapons, striking paintings and various works of art to take you on an exciting journey into the history of the place.

From the 17th century, the Riegersburg was known far and wide for its endless formidable fortifications. You can reach this impressive fortress via a historic footpath or using the modern inclined elevator as well as visiting the interesting exhibitions there. The falconry presentations by the Riegersburg raptor centre are a real crowd puller.

Lockenhaus fortress

Lockenhaus fortress is well worth a visit due to its historical and artistic treasures and well preserved rooms. The fortress is Austria’s last knights’ fortress and always has plenty of interesting exhibitions and programmes on offer for children.

Schlaining fortress

Schlaining fortress is Austria’s only centre for peace research and teaching and houses the European Peace Museum. Here the themes of ‘violence and peace’ are addressed in a clear and educational manner. The armoury and cast iron exhibitions are particularly worth seeing as are the castle keep and moat which has been redesigned as a green space.

Herberstein garden palace

The name Herberstein and its family of owners represent a picturesque garden palace and impressive animal park. Families with children as well as visitors with an interest in art and history will take pleasure in this popular excursion.
