Whether you visit one of the many castles in Burgenland or Styria, take a tour of the farm shops and markets or enjoy a sightseeing tour to one of the nearby towns in Hungary. A visit is always worthwhile!
Fortresses and castles
Burgenland is home to more old fortresses and picturesque castles than almost any other region. Güssing Fortress, the oldest fortress in Burgenland, houses innumerable cultural properties and is the venue of the yearly summer festival. If you cross the border to Styria, you can visit Riegersburg fortress which offers falconry displays and changing exhibitions, and Herberstein garden castle with its parks, the zoo and the nature park. On Schlaining castle you can find the European Peace Museum. These castles and fortresses are only a few of many in the south-east region of Austria. Discover lots of secrets from the past and set off in search of the history of the knights and lords who once lived here.
Excursions to Hungary
If you have visited Burgenland before, then why not take a trip to one of the destinations in nearby Hungary? The oldest town in Hungary is Szombathely which is home to historic riches, the village of Ják, Köszég at the foot of the Günsergebirg and beautiful landscapes in the Raab – Örsèg – Goricko Nature Park between Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Budapest is also well worth a visit for anyone prepared to take a longer trip.
Pleasures of paradise
Winegrowers, vegetable farmers, bakers, confectioners and lots of other purveyors of delicious tasty treats from the south Burgenland region: they all combine a passion for their homeland with top quality regional products and the ‘Stück vom Paradies’ (piece of paradise) quality symbol. Dine at one of the down-to-earth ‘piece of paradise’ restaurants or visit a vinotheque and chat with the winegrowers over a glass of wine or Uhudler. Special events are often held here with the biggest being the annual gourmet pleasure festival.
