Castles and Palaces
Like hardly any any other region, the Burgenland is littered with old castles and picturesque palaces.
Castle Güssing, the oldest castle in the Burgenland, houses a vast number of cultural assets and serves as the location for the annual summer festivals. Above the styrian border lies the Riegersburg, where bird of prey demonstrations and exhibitions await you, as well as the fairytale-like Garden palace Herberstein with a zoo and a natural preserve. At castle Schlaining you can visit the European peace museum.

Historical cities
The historic old town of Hartberg in the east of Styria is only around 25 minutes away. It is one of the best preserved old towns in Styria and has an eventful history. A first settlement on the nearby „Ringkogel“ excisted as early as the new stone age, which was followed by more in the following cultural epochs. On an archaeological circular path around the „Ringkogel“ you can explore the „ring wall“, which the Celts used as a proctection against enemies and which gave the mountain its name.
Hartberg was founded by margrave Leopold I von Styar soon after 1122 as the first Traungauer-Pfalz on styrian soil. Today the charming old town in Hartberg invites you to stroll, enjoy and discover. As the „city of senses“ it has numerous sights and excursions like the romantic „Karner”, the parish church, the castle, the museum and many more.

Excursions to Hungary
If you already are in the Burgenland, it is worth it to explore the neighboring Hungary. The oldest town Szomabathely with its historical riches, the town Jak, Köszeg at the foot of the Günser mountains or scenic beauties in the Raab- Örseg- Goricko nature park between Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Budapest is also an option for those who do not shy away from a longer journey.
Eco energy land
Get to know a model region for autonomous energy generation. The eco energy land includes at the moment 18 communities in the dictricts Güssing and Oberwart. Interested people can be guided through one of the energy systems, such as a district heating system, a biogas system or the unique biomass power plant in Güssing. A visit to the eco energy land can be combined with a bike excursion on the specially created bike path equipped with an information guidance system.
