Even if the name of Burgenland is not attributed tot he high density of castles, it deserves the label „Land of castles and palaces“ like no other in this region.

All across the country you will find these buidlings that are witness to a rich and turbulent past that you are invites to step into.

Castle Güssing

In the oldest castle oft he Burgenland a big museum can be visited. Over 5000 exhibits, like weapons, magnificent paintings and various art objects, take you on an exciting journey into the history of this place. In addtion to a year round excursion destination, the castle is also a venue for exchibitions and in Summer a stage for concerts and festivals.

Castle Riegersburg

Because of its countless and mighty fortifications, the Riegersburg was considered the strongest fortress far and wiede from the 17th century.
Conquer the impressive complex over the historic foot path or with the modern inclined lift and visit the interesting exhibitions. A crowd favourite are the falkonry demonstrations of the bird of pray station Riegersburg.

Castle Lockenhaus

Castle Lockenhaus is especially worth a visit for it‘s art-historical treasures and the well preserved historical rooms. In terms of art history as well as historical the mysterious castle near the border is one of Burgenlands greatest treasures. The last real knight’s castle of austria offers interesting exhibitions and programms for kids.

Castle Schlaining

As home to the center of peace research and teaching of peace, the castle Schlaining houses the European Museum for peace. The Subject of „Violence and peaxe“ is presented here in a clear and educational manner. Also worth seeing are the collection of weapons and artifical iron, the castle keep and the moat that has been converted into a green area.

Herberstein Garden Castle

The name Herberstein stands next to the owner family itself for the picturesque garden castle as well as the impressive zoo. Herberstein Castle in Styria, which dates back to the 13th century is still inhabited by the now 21st generation of the family with the same name.
Families with kids, as well as art historical and historical interested visitors will enjoy this popular destination.

Kornberg Castle

Somewhat hidden in the rural idyll of south east Styria lies Kornberg Castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1284. in its original form, the castle, sourrunded by a castle wall, had a defensive character. Today the castle is a two story complex that hides a magnificent renaissance courtyard reinforced with four towers. As the cultural center of Southeast Styria, the castle regularly invites to handicraft exhibitions.

Castle Burgau

Today’s moated castle Burgau was built in the 12th century as a strategically important foritification against the threat from neighboring countries tot he east. Today the round tower oft he property houses the municipal office. The mayor and thus also the „lord of the castle“ is availble to interested visitors for a private tour with advance notice.
