The three Ayurvedic doshas
What do you long for?
An overview of the Ayurvedic body types
Published: March 23, 2026
Ayurveda, a holistic system of natural medicine, originated in India and has been practiced there for more than 5,000 years.
The basis for its numerous treatments are the three life energies — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — also known as “doshas.” These energies are not only present in every living organism but also serve as the pillars of health.
When a dosha becomes imbalanced, it can affect a person’s health and lead to symptoms of illness. Therefore, Ayurvedic teachings aim to restore balance to these three energies within the body, thereby promoting better health and physical and mental well-being.
The three doshas are expressed with varying intensity in every human body. This is referred to as different Ayurvedic body types. Depending on the balance of these life energies, different dietary regimens and body treatments are used to restore the doshas to balance. During a wellness holiday in Austria at the superior 4-star hotel Larimar in Stegersbach, guests enjoy a professional Ayurvedic program that is individually tailored to their specific Ayurvedic type.

The three “doshas” in Ayurveda: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
All three life energies are present in every organism. However, the intensity of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha usually varies. A person’s Ayurvedic type depends on which doshas are most dominant in their body.
The Vata Ayurvedic type
The Vata dosha is associated with the element of air and governs all movement in the body, as well as circulation and digestion. People with a stronger Vata constitution are usually slender, petite, and mentally very active.
Due to the nature of this life energy, restlessness and sleep disturbances can often occur. Warm, regular meals are beneficial for Vata types, though strongly spiced dishes should generally be avoided.

The Pitta Ayurvedic type
The Pitta dosha consists of the elements of fire and water and represents the principle of metabolism in Ayurvedic teachings. Pitta types often have fair skin and are prone to skin conditions. They are also typically characterized by a sensitive and ambitious nature.
While sweet, bitter, and astringent foods are beneficial for their bodies, spicy foods, alcohol, and coffee should be avoided. This type plays a particularly significant role in Ayurveda during the summer, as the Pitta dosha is easily thrown out of balance by warm temperatures.
The Kapha Ayurvedic type
The Kapha dosha is characterized by the elements of water and earth and represents the structural principle in Indian natural medicine. People who belong to the Kapha type are often good-natured and have a sturdy build. They tend to be less active and have a sluggish digestion. For this reason, they should avoid fatty and heavy foods.
Treatments for individual Ayurvedic types and constitutions
It is rare for someone to be classified as a “pure” Ayurvedic type. Rather, an individual’s constitutional type is determined by the relative balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Consequently, there are a wide variety of mixed types, each requiring different forms of treatment.
Once it is determined which doshas are more pronounced in the body, the less dominant life energies can be strengthened through personalized diets and health treatments based on Ayurvedic principles. This brings the body and mind into balance, making them less susceptible to various ailments and diseases.
