Calmness for the Pitta type
What do you long for?
The Pitta dosha in Ayurveda
Published: March 23, 2026
Energy, structure, and a fiery temperament. Pitta types need one thing above all else: enough calmness.
In Ayurveda, the millennia-old Indian system of medicine, the three doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha form the foundation of our physical and mental balance. Every person possesses all three doshas, but one of them is usually particularly dominant and shapes one’s constitution, metabolism, and personality. Those with a Pitta dominance associate heat and energy with drive and determination. In contrast to the airy Vata type and the grounded Kapha type, the elements of fire and water are at the forefront for Pitta.
Pitta types tend to overheat physically and emotionally. Irritability, feeling overwhelmed, high self-expectations, and digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome are often typical consequences. This makes balance, conscious relaxation and a balanced diet more important for the Pitta type. At the Ayurveda hotel Larimar in Burgenland, Austria, overheated Pitta types can gently find their way back to center through balancing meals, healing treatments, and plenty of space to simply be.

Diet for the Pitta type
As with all Ayurvedic types, diet is a key factor. But for the Pitta type in particular, who is due to their temperament and ambition prone to acidification, a balanced diet is essential. Larimar’s vital cuisine specializes specifically in Ayurvedic nutrition.
For the Pitta type, this means: bitter, sweet, and astringent flavors, which gently regulate the inner fire, are good for the body; spicy foods, as well as alcohol and coffee, should be avoided.
During the special Ayurveda detox at Larimar, Indian health specialists help gently stimulate the digestive fire, thereby using healthy nutrition to prevent precisely the kind of acidification that so easily throws Pitta types out of balance.
At the Larimar health hotel in Burgenland, guests can also have an Ayurvedic pulse analysis with health and nutrition counseling to create a personalized meal plan tailored to their own dosha.
A Panchakarma treatment is also recommended for Pitta types, with a particular focus on cleansing and detoxification, as well as regeneration and energy harmonization.

What you should eat as a Pitta type
In Ayurvedic cuisine, Pitta types should prioritize cooling and digestion-promoting foods. What matters here is not just the temperature of the food, but above all its internal, energetic effect. Ingredients such as coconut milk, pomegranates, or fennel seeds, for example, help balance the Pitta dosha. Spicy or heavily seasoned foods, on the other hand, should be avoided, as they can cause additional irritation.
What’s good for the Pitta type:
- Vegetables: artichokes, broccoli, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage, and squash
- Fruits: mangoes, melons, pomegranates, berries (sweet), apples, figs, and grapes (dried fruit should be avoided)
- All legumes (except lentils)
- Small amounts of nuts and seeds, e.g., pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds
- Grains: Basmati or white rice, spelt, and oats (cooked)
- Spices: Cardamom, coriander, fennel seeds, turmeric, and cumin
What the Pitta type should avoid in their diet:
- highly acid-forming foods (vinegar, mustard, fruit juices)
- ice-cold beverages and very hot foods
- spicy spices such as chili, pepper, or ginger
- stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol
- too much salt
How Ayurveda supports the Pitta type
When the Pitta dosha becomes unbalanced, this often manifests as impatience, perfectionism, and inner restlessness. This fiery dosha also makes itself felt physically — for example, through hot flashes, inflammation, loss of appetite, or sleep disturbances. Especially in the summer, many Pitta types are therefore prone to imbalance.
The summer Ayurveda program at Larimar addresses this very issue: carefully selected oils, cooling herbs, and specially developed rituals have a balancing, regulating, and calming effect. Cooling treatments, such as a foam ceremony, are also particularly beneficial for Pitta types.
Daily Hatha yoga with experienced yoga masters from India also help to tame the inner fire: through gentle postures (asanas), targeted breathing techniques (pranayama), and mindful meditation, body temperature is regulated and the mind is deeply calmed. This makes it possible to maintain serenity, grounding, and inner balance even during the hottest months.
