Weight loss with Ayurveda
Published: June 18, 2026
In Ayurveda, food is considered a remedy for boosting energy and vitality in everyday life.
It seems that a miracle cure for a slim figure – one that aligns with modern society’s ideal of beauty and is considered a panacea for excess weight – has not yet been discovered. It is widely known that fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and the like are healthy for our bodies and can help us stay slim and energetic.
However, in an age of allergies and food intolerances, generalizations are difficult to make. Instead, the focus is on each individual’s uniqueness – even when it comes to weight loss. Foods that one person tolerates well can lead to blockages and weight gain in another. Ayurveda, the more than 5,000-year-old traditional medicine from India, addresses precisely this: individuality.
At the Larimar Ayurveda hotel in Austria, the Ayurvedic diet is individually tailored to each guest’s needs – after all, the uniqueness of the individual is at the heart of this Indian system of health.

Ayurveda treatments for weight loss and wellbeing
The elements of earth, fire, water, air, and space shape who we are. In Ayurvedic health and nutrition, the three “doshas” (forces) influence our individual physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. Depending on the balance of Vata (lively, slender, restless), Pitta (sensitive, ambitious), and Kapha (good-natured, strong, grounded), your constitutional or Ayurvedic type is determined. Your Ayurvedic diet, as well as the specific oils and herbs used in treatments, are individually tailored to your constitutional type.
During your health retreat in Austria at the Hotel Larimar, our friendly and highly competent Ayurvedic physician Kukku Ramesh from Kerala will determine your constitutional type through an Ayurvedic pulse analysis and explain how you can keep your doshas in balance to achieve and maintain good health.

Ayurveda for weight loss – without having to give up much
In Ayurveda, fasting is not necessary for sustainable weight loss – rather, it is proper nutrition that provides the energy and vitality needed to meet the high demands of daily life and helps you reach your target weight. In this Indian system of health, food is even considered a remedy, with spices playing a very special role in Ayurvedic cuisine. The three “doshas” – the life energies Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – are also taken into account in Ayurvedic cooking.
For example, slender Vata types should prefer warm Ayurvedic dishes, while robust Kapha types should avoid heavy foods. The Ayurvedic chef at Larimar explains how proper nutrition works and how you can use it to strengthen your immune system:
- Food should primarily be warm, gently prepared, and fresh.
- Ice-cold beverages should be avoided, as they weaken digestive power.
- Hot water should be drunk with meals.
- Lunchtime is the time for the main meal; in the evening, one should eat light fare.
- Don’t eat until you’re actually hungry and the previous meal has been fully digested (after 3–6 hours).
- Enjoy your meals in a quiet and pleasant setting, without time pressure and with few distractions.

The right diet for your Ayurvedic type
A complete meal ideally includes all six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent – this creates a balance among all the elements. The meal should be appropriate for the season and time of day and take into account the dosha of the food.
Breakfast should be light and ideally include freshly squeezed fruits such as oranges and mangoes. Vata types can also enjoy a heartier milk porridge. In addition, the Hotel Larimar offers a wide selection of Ayurvedic tea specialties.
Ayurvedic cuisine is characterized in particular by its diverse ingredients and spices—especially nutmeg, saffron, cardamom, and cinnamon—which have balancing and cleansing effects and stimulate the metabolism. This allows you to lose weight with pleasure as a bonus.
Losing weight with Ayurveda – the slimming plan for every type
Vata types should eat foods that calm the Vata dosha. Nutritious stews, casseroles, soups, rice, and similar dishes are beneficial.

Steamed vegetables such as asparagus, beets, and carrots, ripe fruits like bananas and berries, yogurt, and vegetable oils are particularly good for maintaining a slim figure. Spices such as anise, basil, fennel, and ginger – and especially warm meals – are recommended.
Pitta types tend to be hot-natured and should therefore eat cooling foods such as cucumbers, lettuce, bell peppers, zucchini, apples, etc. Barley, oats, rice, cottage cheese, nuts, and similar foods are also suitable for Pitta types. In addition, heating foods and heavily spiced dishes are less suitable for Pitta types.
Kapha types tend to be overweight and should therefore choose foods that are pungent, light, and dry. Low-fat foods such as fresh fruit, salads, and vegetables that grow above ground are beneficial. From the spice rack, ginger and cilantro are recommended. Sunflower seeds can also be eaten, but nuts should be avoided.
